I'd be fine with both of those.
Vertical space is already a bit tricky. If you put the post window below
the code window (that's what I do), there's not a lot of vertical space for
code. If you put it to the side, then you end up doing one of two things:
either the window takes the full screen width, making it hard to have GUIs
visible at the same time, or line width is sharply limited.
So, if the status bar takes up too much space, none of the choices is
really good. So I'm glad to hear that you're planning to be careful about
that. Thanks!

PS While looking at that, it wouldn't hurt to review the background color
for border elements, including the status area, in dark themes :D
