Hah! That is it. I had changed the maxLogins when I was trying to send messages directly to the server from python.
Not sure why that would change the number of available busses, but I trust there is a reason. The helpfile says at maxLogins " This is also used by the language to split ranges of Nodes, Buffers, or Busses.”
