The thinking is it could have caused something to be installed or reconfigured (drivers? sound settings?) that'd affect other system playback.

Of course, but this genuinely did start immediately after installing and running SC and there was no hint of a problem beforehand. If I plug a toaster in and the lights go out, I might suspect the toaster had something to do with it. :) It could all be a coincidence, but I'd love to hear if others have experienced anything similar.
