computer keyboard input to one window?

I’ve got a multi-window interface for a piece and wondering if
there is a way to make one of the windows persist as the active
one so that computer keyboard input goes to it.   
Or is the only way to make a window accept keyboard input to click on 
it first ? For example, MIDI inputs can change GUIs in any window 
without a problem, but I can’t find a way to channel computer keyboard input to 
control interface in one window.
