I've just noticed: you have a typo in your IP address! It should be
NetAddr("127.0.0.*1*", 9989)
The .remote method really should work, once the IP address and port are
correct.
You might also need to run:
u.notify;
and/or
u.initTree;
I'm not sure though, I don't have the AU server handy right now to test.
