Thanks a lot.  This looks pretty much like what I was seeking.

It would be nice if the note names were somehow extensible, such
that a Panola could be reconfigured to do percussion...

There is a typo in the HelpSource/Classes/panola.schelp:

...
        \ampl, ~phrase.volumePattern,
...

should probably read

        \amp, ~phrase.volumePattern,
