Yeah, we all seem to have come up with a subtly different solution to the bitmap depth problem (see http://hg.thepriorities.com/zinf/main/rev/6fac96bf7e10) I just went with the one that seemed simpler when I merged. As far as I can tell from reading the GTK/GDK docs they are all equvialent in that they get the depth of the root window, but I could be wrong.
