Ok, here's another shot at the gtk2 patch. I think this fixes all the
real issues that *I* have been having, so if anybody wants to test it
out and find some new problems I'd be grateful.

At this stage we are still using a lot of officially deprecated features
(most notably the GtkCList and GtkCTree), but I think cleaning this up
will be a lot of work.

After that, (or perhaps in parallel) we will need to look through the
Gnome HIG, and see how much of it we want to try and follow.
