In fact, the "Manage 3rd party software" gui tool also calls "package uninstall" in the background. > But I still don't quite get how to use that protocol. Do I need to read from > "bla.package" when I execute "package install bla.package"? And when I run > "package install bla.package", how can I prevent it from poping up the GUI? > Because I would like to use my own GUI. You set AUTOPACKAGE_FRONTEND to your own frontend before launching package install. The logic is here: http://trac.autopackage.org/browser/main/trunk/share/apkg-io#L320 The frontend will get the path to the FIFO as first argument - you should open it for reading. I'm not sure why we close it after each read, perhaps to signal the backend we've finished reading or something (mike?)
