My opinion is that limiting options is not a sound decision.

There are also possible issues when the application has to perform 
actions later by itself. Autopackage has gone to considerable lengths 
(pains rather) to make integrating shortcuts, mime types and such work 
flawlessly across distributions. I think that applications should be 
able to reuse this work, rather than implement their own (possiby 
broken) logic.
