Yes, this is indeed a trend. My personal opinion is that not
everything can move online, so there will still be a need for local
applications.

Hey, at least one app needs to be run locally: the web browser (or
equivalent). ;-)

Also, since the computer is not always online, you *have* to have some
apps locally. I often sit with my laptop in conference rooms with no
web access. I'd hate it if I couldn't take notes because my word
processor/editor is on www.wherever.com.

I think that would actually be ok. I mean, the ultimate goal of
autopackage is to make installation easier, and what could possibly be
easier than "no installation required"? :-)

You are certainly correct. Most web apps are closed source which is a
major downside of moving to the web.

Sure, there are open source apps too, but they are mostly consisting
of forums and CMS type "apps".
