Ok, I admit, that was taken out of thin air. But with open source
apps, you still have a dozen apps in every "important"[1] category..
office apps, web browsers, email clients, games, media players etc.
Not to mention the wide range of free OS'es.

I can't think of that many open source web apps. And since I think
many people care more about the free-as-in-beer, rather than
free-as-in-speech, closed source web apps fit the needs of many people
since they are (most often) free of charge.
