  I read the FAQ from top to bottom but couldn't find what you are referring
to, unless you are referring to the package hierarchies of distributions and
thinking of this as the same kind of thing, possibly?

  Could you give me just the short on the reasoning behind why you believe
such a system can't scale?  I could not find any way to search the
archives.  The link to archives only shows September 2007 and there is no
apparent search feature.

  On the surface, it seems that such a system is necessary to scale and
scaling is the primary advantage of it.  Currently, the list of autopackages
on the autopackage.org site is spotty as per versions and many of them are
broken.  In any case, hoping each software project ream will maintain an
autopackage only scales in theory.  It doesn't scale in reality, if they
don't do it--which they don't and (unless autopackage becomes the generally
preferred method) won't.

  My idea is to provide a web/RESTful interface to the AutoPortage so it can
be maintained by the authors or anyone else willing to take on this
responsibility.  Like Gentoo's portage, it's just a registry of where to get
the sources (of each version of each app) from and a script for compiling
and packaging it (as opposed to Gentoo's script for compilign and installing
it).

  Software-wise, I can certainly make this scale.. I can make it
decentralized as per servers but centralized as per use.
