That's a good question.

Actually, the interesting thing about 0export isn't that the archives
are self-extracting (I just mention this because it's often seen as a
difference between the two systems). What actually happens is that the
contents of the archive get added to the Zero Install cache, and
they're stored in a way that will allow importing the archive with a
separate utility in future, checking GPG signatures and digests as you
go. That means that, when the program is added this way, you also get
the usual other features from Zero Install, e.g.

- Notification (via the D-BUS notification system) when new versions
are available.
- Digital signatures on updates.
- Integrity validation (at install time and later using "0store
verify", or the newer "0store audit").
- No conflicts (with other Zero Install programs or with distribution
packages, etc).
- Automatic sharing between users (if enabled by the sysadmin).

Klik 2 seems to have gone a bit quiet, but if you look at an example
of their recipes, you'll see that it's based on the Zero Install
format (hint "View Page Source"):
