Problems with __ctype_b@GLIBC_2.0

When I'm trying to compile Pidgin with apbuild I get the following error:

/usr/bin/ld: .libs/log_reader.so: No symbol version section for
versioned symbol `__ctype_b@GLIBC_2.0'

A similar error appears when compiling git:

git-1.6.2.1/xdiff/xutils.c:243: undefined reference to `__ctype_b@GLIBC_2.0'

I'm running Ubuntu 8.10. Does someone have an idea why this happens?
There is no __ctype_b symbol in apsymbols.h.
