But those are very different kinds of retention and do not apply to the
same matter. There is a third retention type - File retention.
Job Retention means how long you want to save in catalog the job execution
details. When expired the catalog is updated only. Your backups are
untouched and still occupy backup space.
File retention is similar.
Volume (media) retention means how long you want to save backup data of any
kind which includes backup data on your media and all metadata in the
catalog.
