Your analysis is correct, I'll submit the patch to devel asap.
Odd as when I was developing my patches I was testing on the same sort of
volumes, except primarily in a qemu UEFI environment.
I assume it slipped through due how qemu handles the null page, filling it
will all null bytes, which would explain how you got spare values like that.
