Follow-up Comment #1, bug #67095 (group grub):

This morning I discovered that a workaround for this problem is to specify
GRUB_TERMINAL=console in the /etc/default/grub file on debian. This results in
the following two lines being added to the /boot/grub/grub.cfg file:

terminal_input console
terminal_output console

The display of grub menu text is slower and more primitive using this mode but
in the overall scheme of things the boot experience is pretty much
indistinguishable.
