reading strings

Say I want to write-line a string (using File object) and then get it back
later with read-line. Because write-line adds a newline and read-line
doesn't remove it, the strings that I read have unwanted newlines on the
end. I don't know how to get the original string back. I don't know how to
chop off the newline in breve either.
