Unparseable replies from GNATS server

As I make changes to the dbconfig, I will get the "unparseable reply" error. Running under debug=all, it appears that there is no response from gnatsd. On the server there is no daemon running. Is the recommendation to use the trunk instead of the released 4.00 version? Does the gnatsd server log any failures that can be looked at?
