alpha release pending

I cleaned up a couple problems with the automake/autoconf
build/install process tonight.  I still need to remember what the
correct process is to upload the tarball to alpha -- something
regarding a clear-text signed command file or some such.  I'll look
into it tomorrow and get the snapshot up.  Sorry for the delay.  I
need some sleep.
