Date custom field bug?

I know, I know.. I am the bringer of bad news! I think I have found a bug and i wondered if anyone else is aware of it. If you create a custom field with a type of 'date' that ISNT mandatory. You get 'Invalid value for Deadline.' even though it isn't required. Is this a bug or a feature?
