Strange characters in extended project

When I enable the extended project browser using
$g_show_etended_project_browser = ON; I get the characters <?>&raquo;
prepended to sub projects.  I have searched for this and found it
reported on a couple of occasions but no resolution.  I know it is HTML
for "<<" but I don't know why it is showing up in the display the way it
is.  Any ideas?
