i18n: xpot from po-utils

For extracting translateable strings, we used xpot from po-utils for quite some time. Do we now have a replacement for this, it seems quite unmaintained? If yes: Is there a tool that allows to extract strings marked with doubled quotes, like ''"string" ""'string' (and the same for triple quoted strings prefixed with an empty string). I've found no tool except xpot that can do this (or I'm missing the necessary command-line incantations). Does anybody know if there is a tool the can replace xpot in this regard?
