xapian and msg files

I recently moved one of our larger trackers ('it' tracker) to a host that has the xapian python package. The roundup code checks to see if can use that, and uses the Indexer in roundup.backends.indexer_rdbms if the xapian import fails. One of the users of the 'it' tracker noticed that an 'all text' search for SCCS returned 10 matches. It appears to at a minimum not look at the msg files. On the other host which does not have the xapian python package the same search returns 607 matches, and that includes msg files.
Are you able to use xapian successfully? I'm tempted to turn it off and forget about stemming.
