Although you made some very good points, I'm against removing the button
  <input type="hidden" name="@remove@messages" tal:attributes="value msg/id">
from the share/roundup/templates/classic/html/issue.item.html template:

1. The name of the template ("classic") suggests that this template 
   will stay more or less very similar from version to version.

2. Removing a user visible feature from any software package in 
   some newer version has been almost ever a very bad idea (TM).
   (Look at the Gnome 3.0 and Unity projects which have alienated 
   and lost so many users to MATE, Xfce, KDE and other competing 
   Linux desktop environments).

A possible solution would be to add another template
(may be we can call it the "clean" template?) which
could simply start as a copy of the "classic" template
but with the out commented message "remove" button
and possible other things, which might not be needed
by many people.  but this new template should not be
so crippled as the empty "minimal" template.

The README/TEMPLATE-INFO.txt files could then point 
new Roundup users to this new template instead of the 
classic template.
