Re: tracker does not want to send mail

This is still a problem for us. What are the next steps I should take to figure out what's going on? Is there a different MTA that you recommend instead of postfix?

I get logs in /var/log/mail.log when I send mail from the command line.

I do not get logs from /var/log/mail.log when I attempt to send mail from roundup.

I installed alpine on the system I'm working with. It can send mail with no problems, though I'm not convinced that told us anything - the alpine documents say

"For UNIX _Alpine_, if neither _smtp-server_ or _sendmail-path_ is set,
   the default sendmail program is invoked with the "-bs -odb -oem" flags,
   and the message is sent using the SMTP protocol. "

None of the specified options are set, so I presume that Alpine is calling sendmail with those arguments. Fwiw, sendmail comes from postfix.

Yup that looks fine. If Roundup is sending email, there should be a
postfix log entry when it connects to the server. There should be one
for your telnet as well.

I haven't set up postfix in many years, but I seem to remember that it
is possible to reject an non-local email address received via smtp
(although I could be confusing it with another MTA). IIRC it was to
stop postfix from being an open mail relay. I don't know if it was the
default or not though. You could still send non-local email using the
sendmail stub program or the submit interface. I don't expect that to
be an issue but I bring up since it was easy to diagnose from the logs
if you knew what you were looking for.
