Double click problems with Ubuntu Linux

I reported that double clicks were not working in Electric running
under Ubuntu 8.04. Actually they will work if the delay between
clicks is very short.
This delay is not affected by the System Preferences>Mouse in Ubuntu.
Does anyone know how to adjust the double click delay time?
