Your example is relatively simple if Irene starts with references to Bob and Carol. (Alice is on vacation.) Irene introduces Bob to Carol by giving Bob a facet to Carol that returns and identifier that Irene can associate with Carol but Bob cannot. Should Irene wish to introduce Carol to Alice, who is now back from vacation, Irene can give Alice a different facet. If the facets given to Alice and Bob return the same identifier, then they can determine that they point to the same person without being able to determine who that person is. They can't if Irene constructs the facets to return different identifiers. ________________________ Alan Karp Principal Scientist Enterprise Services, Office of the CTO Hewlett-Packard Company 1501 Page Mill Road Palo Alto, CA 94304 (650) 857-3967, fax (650) 857-7029 http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Alan_Karp
