[David Chizmadia] Sandstorm (https://sandstorm.io) is doing exactly this for
the web services world. It seems likely that the communications and
programming infrastructure that evolves to support Sandstorm development
will eventually be pared down to provide simplified connectivity to things
that would be most easily controlled through a web interface.

There is actually an funding opportunity that could cover exactly this kind
of development in the form of topic
(http://dodsbir.net/sitis/display_topic.asp?Bookmark=45918) in the current
DARPA SBIR, which (now) is accepting submissions until 25 February.
