Moving data between installations

Hi,

in the process of learning this system, i have ended up with one old 
installation with some data that i wish to migrate over to a newer 
installation. (lets just say, it's easier than upgrading and fixing the 
older installation... this question is also relevant for me in case 
certain data needs a site of its own in the future)

there's the theme directory, the data directory, the database entries 
for the data... and something else i guess, because i see the new data 
in the admin interface, but not via the live site.

what's the proper way of moving data?
