Ooh cool. never thought of that solution.
What we usually do is to add those directories to the main .htaccess in
the exclude list, around
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/*files/
before the
RewriteRule ^/*(.+)$ ./index.php?path=$1 [QSA]
