Description Topic maps have been touted as the "equivalent of the traditional back-of-the-book index" for the world of electronic information and the "GPS of the Web". A prominent vendor of topic map solutions claims that they promise to "revolutionize the ways in which we search for and navigate information". How do we separate the truth from the hype? Much is made about the ability of topic maps to integrate information and automate merging of diverse sources. How is this applicable in complex business information environments? Essentially, what are topic maps and how can they be used today?
