I suppose the next large acquisition of this kind would follow the same
rules of thumb: major enterprise software/infrastructure provider looking
for a product to replace its own offering which isn't up to par. Microsoft
is one that comes to mind, and I've been putting up bets what vendor would
be their best fit for quite some time now. Although maybe right now they're
betting on MOSS2007 filling the gap. And I'd still watch out for IBM - they
still have quite some of the ECM landscape to cover.

What interests me about the Oracle/Stellent acquisition is that Oracle have
been strugling with their position in this market for some time now: many CM
solutions depend on Oracle databases for storage, so they wouldn't want to
alienate those customers, and on the other hand, they have the ambition to
be a player in that field themselves. Which will have them doing some
interesting loops during sales pitches, no doubt; with Stellent in their
portfolio, they might find them competing against themselves a lot more
often.
