Brian, My company, Endeca, recently partnered with TLC corporation for this very type of application. There is a demo that has been built using millions of MARC records. If you are curious I am sure I can get you access to the demo. It is also deployed at HBS Publishing but you need a username/password to see the faceted navigation.
