I'm not sure this is what you're asking, but...

For an intranet I worked on, we needed to deliver news to employees 
based on their location, business unit and role. We created many news 
"channels" -- for some, subscription was mandatory; for others, 
employees could subscribe if they chose to.

We wanted to let employees filter news by topic, but when I rolled 
off the project, we had not implemented that functionality. There 
were also varying levels of importance for news -- at launch, normal 
and urgent.

It took a bit of training to educate those who were writing and 
posting the news about what channels to select, how to set a smart 
expiration date, using the "urgent" level correctly, etc.

For press releases on an external site, I think there's less to 
consider. People need to filter by date, business unit and topic, and 
the lifecycle dates (post, archive, expire) can be defined pretty 
easily. And the releases may need to appear on public pages, in the 
investor section and in the media/press section.
