Hi Bruce,

The net for ECM has been cast so wide that your question is essentially
moot. And the net continues to widen each year.

I believe there no longer exists any functionality that is truly unique to
WCM (or any other *Ms for that matter).  You'd be hard pressed to find a
feature that I could not point out in one or more so-called ECM systems
(just look at the M&A activity of the past four years).

As if that isn't confusing enough to the average user, it gets worse.  Humor
me as I take you on a brief journey beyond the boundary of CM as you know it
today.

Storage technology vendors are positioning themselves to devour the content
management market.  Not only are the players bigger and better-funded, but
they have a far better understanding of the physical storage issues (backup,
recovery, migration, replication, and archiving) that underpin CM.  Why
target CM? Storage vendors are busy building momentum behind another
buzzword concept known as Information Lifecycle Management (or ILM), one
aspect of which is CM. If you haven't read about Information Lifecycle
Management, hold on to your seat.  ILM incorporates both content management
and storage management. The idea is to optimize the cost of physically
storing information assets by moving assets to the most appropriate storage
devices (over time) based on changing service level requirements and usage
patterns (from high-end disk arrays for subsecond access, to mid-tier
near-line storage, to low-end SATA arrays, to tape libraries for archiving).

I could go on and on but it's well beyond the scope of your original
question.  Just thought you might like a glimpse of where the industry is
headed.
