Hi there Julian,

I might agree with Darrel and say that the requirement of ubiquitous access
to web-content can be addressed in different ways and at different levels.

While flexible template coding will bring you some of the way it will most
likely not solve all your delivery requirements and having only predefined
destinations such as wap, web, etc. is a bad idea as well as it leaves you
inflexible for future requirements.

What you want/need for content accessibility/delivery is a CMS that meets
the following requirements:

* Gives developers free hands in terms of templating
* Different Publishing mechanisms (generating static files or dynamic
delivery)
* can set headers/mimetypes of your content! (important but tricky
requirement - for example to set content type to "text/vnd.wap.wml",
"application/rtf" or "text/hdml" instead of only "text/html")
* integrates with transformation engines (to create word doc, pdf's etc)
* "cleans up" data in the content aggregation/contribution process (i.e.
strips out the proprietary tags in MS Office HTML documents)
* Stores data in the most raw form - preferably in the database for maximum
manipulation.

I represent FatWire Software in Australia and our CMS (Content Server) has
the above capabilities (and so does a few other).

Kind regards,
Daniel

Greetings,

I'm interested in compiling a list of CMS packages that address the notion
of ubiquitous access to web-content. Would there be a particular resource or
CMS class that focus on the delivery to print/lynx/wap/palm/gui platforms?

I realize any if not all can be adapted to perform these functions, but
which are the ones which should be considered first in this regard? Free or
commercial considerations would equally be viable.

Thanks in advance,
Julian Herten-Greaven

What do you mean by 'web content'?

Do you mean content written specifically for the web? If so, then I'd say
most CMSs should do the above. Lynx and GUI browsers (and screen readers,
etc.) can receive the same content (provided it is semantically correct,
well formed, valid, etc.) Print/Palm should be able to use the same content
just in a different template (print friendly template/PDA template). WAP may
need a custom delivery method.

Thanks for the quick reply, Darrel.

What I'm looking for in a CMS is one that takes the ubiquitous (ie: device
independent) access of reviews, articles, and other human-readable data to
the front line. Obviously the question of application/context need be
considered, but what I'm getting at is whether these various distribution
and interaction possibilities have already been considered or do all CMSs
expect SysOps to address the DI issues one... platform... at.. a... time...?

Everyone knows you can load any old page into Lynx and get it to read your
html.. The concern is that it's not enough to have one's pages not generate
errors per se. Is there a particular resource or review that covers the
issue of -usability- across various platforms?

Sitellite CMS claims to support WAP, but as you alluded, this may simply
amount to, once again, just hammering out wall-to-wall custom templates.

Any other CMSs offer WAP support, just for comparative reasons?

Thanks again,
Julian.
