FW: CMS Modules -

 
Hi All,

This is really interesting and a great learning experience! To my
understanding, a WCMS system, requires at the basic to have an highly usable
"Content Production and Content Delivery" modules at the core and then one
can get off the shelf modules which are specific to certain functionality,
such as discussion groups, surveys, etc ...

But -- What about platform and the associated cost with it? Is it possible
to get .NET ready content creation and presentation components instead of
open source products? At a lower cost for achieving these basic
functionality and then add modules later on --??? I am now thinking a little
long term as James mentioned!

I understand products such as Site core and Episerver provide ready solution
– but if we were to look beyond pure play CMS features and take the next
steps -- Do they provide you individual development licenses, say an “SDK”
-- along with their product at a lower cost and whether their framework are
open enough for adding building capabilities? 

For instance, I rather build my information sharing module or Forum module
myself at a later point just by using an "SDK" copy. If they bundle things
like Forms Designer, Task/Process Management framework, Collaboration Engine
framework, Knowledge framework, Topic maps, etc -- I mean just API’s and
some fundamental models then I can do it myself …... 

More I think about this, I think it’s quite possible to get all of these in
a Java or Microsoft based environment product too -- But one has to pay a
humongous initial license fee for this >>> 

Based on the working model I envisioned, can I have a set of open source
product list with such functionality and a approx cost from anyone ...

That's the right way to do it ... I also did it the same manner and now
finished a cms-module and shop-module.

One of the most important core features is a template system - I use vLib
template and some basic classes from Daniels "AbsolutEngine".

This core also gives a lot of freedom for developing:

-  one class for generic database handling
-  another for authentification
-  a third one for basic methods
-  and the template system as user interface to separate logic and
presentation
