Hi Angus

There's lots!  What do you need the taxonomy/classification system for.

Dublin Core - designed for publishing and really a metadata standard
LOM - Learning Object Metadata
e-Gov - electronic governement metadata standard
there are several for geospacial (ISO, FDCG)
Library of Congress - is more general topical classification
Commercial technical and industrial classification schemes
Canada and others are in the process of defining classification and metadata
frameworks for Records Management

And there is always ISO 11179 which offers a framework for defineing your
own needs.
