You raised an interesting point there, just because you buy from a "big boy" such as Microsoft, IBM etc. doesn't protect you from the possibility that they might shelve their product. In fact, it could leave you in a worse position because you won't get the source code nore will you have a product with a future roadmap or support. With dedicated focused CM firms you at least should have some influence over the product strategy which is often lost when talking to the very large firms that have large balance sheets. I believe that you need to look at choosing a CM solution for your requirements based over 5+ years in order to maximise your return on investment.
