Thanks everyone for the great feedback (so far), it certainly provides a lot of food for thought. I think the key thing with the symantiics as to where and when to use names like content, template, layouts, etc comes down to the the structure and capabilities of the system. I've never used a 'professional CMS' (the sort of thing most of you sell), but have been developing my own home grown functionality for the last ten years which has evolved into a pretty capable .Net based system. I have always developed for the lowest common denominator and tried to make things as easy as possible for the end users, who more often than not are office secretaries will little more than Word Processing experience.
