In the basic search, we remove all solr special characters. It is assumed that end users will not realize that certain characters have specific meanings in Solr which can lead to some strange searches, so we clean the search criteria string before sending it in. If you have advanced users or need different types of searching, then you'll need to build your own search form and back end logic. We just provided the simple one that will fit most needs and is useful as a starting point.
