Like I said, not too sure if it's the right way to do it. and for Justin, 
this is a custom form for custom a contentType.
I passed the prefix so I could create my own input field in the form eg:

<select name="#thePrefix#myField" id="#thePrefix#myField" 
class="selectInput required"> etc

and still have it treated as standard during the processForm stage.
