Metadata for search engines

How do I add actual Metadata and Keywords into the page for search engines to spider. When I add some into the feild provided and publish it, I go into the source code of the refreshed page and the data is not in there. Am I even using this correctly? Had a look at the dmHeader source code and there doesnt seem to be any code to even attempt to add some.
