Uploaded images not appearing in /images directory

Seem to be doing something wrong when inserting an image into an html page
using the editor.  I browse my computer for the image and click upload
image.  A broken iimage icon appears in the content editor.  However, the
image is not getting uploaded to the /images directory.  Am I missing a
step?  Just as an experiment, I tried the same upload process for uploading
a file and had a similar result.  I am able to successfully ftp the images
into the /images directory.
