RE: High Volume Open Source CMS Sites

We've also implemented a number of high volume sites on the Zope and Plone
(portal-like add-on for Zope) platform.  These sites get millions of hits
per year and are a major revenue source for one of the world's largest media
and advertising companies.

Don't let anyone kid you though, whether it's a Zope site, ASP, PHP, JSP,
commercial or open source, or whatever type of technology, preparing it for
high volumes especially if you have heavy content objects (images, Flash,
documents, etc.) or highly dynamic content (personalized portal type views,
for example) is difficult on any platform.  Plan for your environment to
take weeks, not hours/days to setup and load test, etc. and plan to purchase
more hardware than for a typical brochureware or blogger site (for load,
failover/redundancy, etc.)

Most of all, save yourself a lot of grief - if you need a
professional/enterprise type site, don't go it alone - have a consultant
whose implemented that technology on that platform help you!  This will SAVE
you money and time if compared to doing the architecture/infrastructure work
yourself, unless you have someone experienced with that platform.  This
doesn't apply to the single-server site serving 15 pages that rarely change
scenario, or the blogger scenario, etc.  It applies to those who even think
they may need a commercial solution, but might be evaluating the more
powerful open source options (which are quite capable.)

The largest site I know of is http://www.boston.com, the website of the
Boston Globe (owned by the New York Times).

It is one of the largest websites in New England, and they converted
recently from a commercial/proprietary CMS to Zope.

Marc Lavallee of Boston.com gave a presentation on their experience at
the third international OSCOM meeting at Harvard Law School Berkman
Center for Internet and Society.
