Depends on the vendor or developer's implementation. With form-based products I've used, some save to XML flat files, others save text into a database (similar to what you probably have today), and still others save XML tagged text into a database. > is there the possibility with > (b) a 'simple matter of a litte bit of softare' I can store things into my > custom database, but still have the CMS manage publising and accessability of > the asset? I'm sure you could find a system compatible with what you already have. Whether or not it'll be a simple matter [to integrate] depends on the CMS you choose. For example, back when I used ezPublish it was fairly straightforward to modify it to use new forms, and access existing content. But that was for my specific purpose, and keeping in mind that in a previous life I designed and modified CMSs for a living. Have you looked at any specific products at this point?
