I would like to use the latest version of JForum Portlet from Jahia
and when I look in CVS, I see two modules. 'jforum' and
'jforum_JSR168' - it looks like 'jforum' has had a couple more recent
check-ins, but the name would suggest the module I want is
'jforum_JSR168'.

Which should I pull?

Also, it looks like these projects are built with JBuilder. Do I need
JBuilder to build the portlet, or can I use a target in one of the Ant
scripts?
