The File Manager is currently based on Apache Slide which is a WebDAV server. You can then add as many new DAV properties to each binary file. Another option, is you only plan to display the file on a web page (and not to access to the new description field through the DAV API) is to create a containerlist (cf Jahia integration guide) which regroups a file field (in order to make a link between the DAV server and the Jahia ECM Server) and a description field (a small or big text in the Jahia vocabulary).
